What Anointing?

A lot of time has been devoted in recent years to the “Anointing”. I’ve seen the term “The Anointing” used to describe everything from the “Gifts of the Spirit”-looking occultic practices going on in mainstream Christianity to outright demonic manifestations taking place at today’s so-called “revivals”. Some feel the anointing is a bottle of herb-scented oil on the podium of a church platform, or perhaps oil from Gethsemane olives, or water from a distant Holy Land. Some believe the anointing is the euphoria, goosebumps and chills that accompanies the crescendo of music at a praise and worship service or the feeling of “warm water or oil” pouring out on them. More confusing still are the teachers who rattle on about different anointings, claiming… “this one’s anointing and my anointing are not the same as someone else’ s anointing, but when they come together, this one’s anointing works in this person but that person doesn’t move in that person’s anointing…” Huh?!? Most blasphemous yet are those who picked up anointings from the dead! Graves of the so-called “Greats” of our day, such as Katherine Kuhlman, are rumored to be spiritual vortices which give off “Anointings” that we can receive and walk in today. Further still, seminars are offered (at top dollar, of course) to teach people how to cultivate their own anointings while covetous men tell us how God told them they were going to walk in a new anointing starting on February 2000 and for us to be a part of this “great move” we should send money to get this “anointing” out. Yet come February, all we got was another letter, another scheme, another hyped–up line extorting money. Don’t forget the flopped waves of so– called anointings men have concocted to keep us interested in church, like “The Elijah Anointing”: Premium profits made off trips to Israel with unchanged lives and dissatisfied expectations to follow; as empty and shallow an experience as the men who dreamed it up.

How about the youth movements like the “John the Baptist Anointing”? Pastors and “youth ministers” cater to the rebellion of a dissatisfied–with–church generation of teens by permitting all sorts of worldliness using John the Baptist as a mentor to keep them in church. This hype eventually fades leaving the kids with another shattered fairytale to build bitterness against God upon. “I feel the anointing in my legs: it’s all over you, take it, take it, take it! Flow with it, yield to the flow.” Yet nothing’s flowing but the demonic powers of hypnotic suggestion and public embarrassment. Should we fail to fall down convulsing or take off running or stagger drunken down the aisle we are considered unspiritual or unbelieving, having “missed the visitation”. So we laugh hysterically, cry uncontrollably, howl and scream, fall fetal and give spiritual birth. We vomit, “prophesy” and carry on all because we are ignorant of God and His Word. The church world today is a maze of confusion and baffle. Many are departing from the simplicity of Christ and follow after men whose tongues are set ablaze by seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. This occultic foray has Simon the sorcerer in the pulpit steering people to himself by claiming some exclusive esoteric knowledge and performing trifling sleight– of– hand tricks to bewitch us from the truth of the gospel into some other gospel that leaves us dependent on the gurus of Christendom.

“For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”
Acts 20:29-30

The fruit of all this has been a fractured weak– minded church with no sure foundation. Many professing Christians are running after every wind of doctrine; chasing signs, wonders, false prophets and false Christs, buying every sensational book and movie about end– time eschatology; but many of these same people have no spiritual life and no real relationship with the Savior. Flippant and flaky we find ourselves in the Granola Church Age: fruits, flakes, and nuts galore! A laughing stock, not for Christ's sake, but because as the salt of the earth, we’ ve lost our savor; only to be trodden under men’s feet; withered, gathered and burned, all because we did not abide in the vine Jesus Christ, and left off to take heed to God and His Word.

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me ,and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:4-5

Many of God’s people seem to exhibit very little growth today. Remaining infants in the faith all the while feeding on sour milk from men’s theologies instead of the sincere milk and meat of God’s pure Word. “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Proverbs 4:18

God wants his children to grow up into the stature of the fullness of Christ to a perfect and mature man or woman of God. But the doctrines of today are severely deficient of the Godly wholesome nutrition that lets us grow. “Brother”, you may say, “What does all this have to do with the Anointing?” My answer is: everything. But to see this we must go into the source of all Godly doctrine: The Scriptures.

Part II

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord…” Isaiah 61:1-2

Jesus Christ declared these words as He taught in the synagogue in his home town of Nazareth in Luke 4:18-19. And He adds, “This Day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” Luke 4:21

He brings this anointing to present tense, when He speaks of His mission here on earth: to heal broken hearts, set free the bound, etc. and says “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord hath anointed me to preach…” Later, in the book of Acts as Peter is bringing the Gospel to Cornelius and others who were also gentiles, he testifies of this anointing:

“...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power…” Acts 16:38a

The anointing God’s talking about is the Holy Ghost. It isn’t just a gift or a feeling, but “it” is actually “He”, the third person of the Godhead, the Spirit of the Father, who lived in Jesus by this same Spirit. Further we read of Jesus:

“… who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.” Acts 10:38

Anointing, by definition means: to be chosen, such choosing represented by a smearing as by oil or grease.

God shows in His Word that the anointing He anoints with is not oil or water or act of man, but rather God, who anoints people with the Holy Ghost and power: the very presence of God Himself. The Word further reveals that His anointing or choosing is accomplished by a “smearing” of the Holy Ghost.

“… after that ye believed , ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance...” Ephesians 1:13-14

God’s presence in our life through the Holy Ghost is the anointing of God upon us. “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Romans 8:9b

Therefore belonging to God and being anointed by God are one in the same. “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” John 3:7

The simplicity of God’s Word helps us see through a lot of the occultic mystery that seems to accompany many teachings about the anointing today. Quite simply put just as God anointed Jesus to carry out His mission upon Earth. So Jesus anoints us to carry out His mission upon Earth: to preach, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim deliverance etc. Jesus assures us,

“All power is given to me in Heaven and Earth, go and teach all nations what I’ve taught you. Go preach the Gospel to every creature. Cast out devils, heal the sick because I’m with you even until the end!” (Matthew 28:18-20 & Mark 16:15-20). Hallelujah!

Part III

I must take a moment here to clarify a long term common misunderstanding about God concerning the gifts of the Spirit. For instance, if I were to lay hands on someone sick and they got healed or if I were to give someone a prophetic word or perhaps a word of wisdom or knowledge, or if I were to cast out a devil. I don’t become an anointed healer, anointed counselor or an anointed exorcist. The one who got healed received the gift of healing and the one who received the prophecy received the gift. Likewise to the one delivered from demons. I am nothing. The anointing, or Holy Ghost, in me bestowed his gift upon another. It is the Holy Ghost who is the healer, prophet, teacher, exorcist. All I am is anointed with his presence. He does the works.

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” I Corinthians 12:4-11

For far too long man has been elevated in the assembly. Gifts are not the anointing! But rather, the anointing is the gift– giver Himself the Holy Spirit of Almighty God! “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father…” James 1:17a

We err when we elevate a man or a woman who lays hands and heals to position of “Healer” as if it were his ability or (God forbid) to call it “his anointing”, when it is God that heals.

“… I am the God that healeth thee…” Exodus 15:26
Peter said “...why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?…” [It‘s Jesus] “... And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.” Acts 3:12-16 The Holy Ghost gives God credit when he accomplishes a work in someone. “Not our
own power or holiness.” The apostles and disciples of old refused to take credit for miracles, signs, wonders, healings and the like. They knew that it was “...Not I but the grace of God which was with me.”
I Corinthians 15:10

Not: “Grace which was with me” but God who is full of grace. God who is full of power. God who is full of holiness. God who is full of gifts to give to men and women who will believe in Him; God was with me! “Not by power nor by might but by my Spirit saith the Lord of Hosts.” The anointing. All our learning, praying, fasting and good deeds do not give us power to heal, save or deliver. God gives that power. “God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul.” Acts 19:11 Look at yourself and say “I’m amazed at what God can do with dirt!” Hallelujah! We do not perform miracles, God does.

We do not deserve glory or credit. God does. The disciples and apostles never had a miracle crusade or a miracle service on some appointed schedule of their own. It’s the Holy Ghost who performs these as He wills. It is also needful to point out that the Holy Spirit never glorifies man, or even himself for that matter. Many of the so– called “Pentecostal Greats” used to glorify the Holy Ghost. I believe this offered a foothold to the devil to bring in false spirits and false anointings into the congregation. When we exalt gifts or spirits we become blind to the forest for the trees.

Today in modern Pentecostal-mania, gifts, spirits and persons of men are all too frequently sought after and exalted, but not the gift–giver Himself. The one who gives the Holy Ghost, the one who anoints with power has been left out. Without Him, beloved, there are no gifts! But I’ve noticed that God is never the headliner on the church marquis any more, but usually it’s some man or woman supposedly anointed with gifts who is up in lights. If Jesus is not credited, If Jesus is not glorified, If Jesus is not preached, but rather, man, then where do you suppose this man’s “gifts” come from? “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders… ” I Thessalonians 2:9

The devil.

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” Matthew 24:24

You see, all this confusing talk of anointings, and prophets who are prophesying contrary to scripture and teachers who are championing “Some New Thing” God supposedly told them He’s doing, are all signs of the end of the world. Jesus cautions us not to go after them nor believe them. Yet despite our Lord’s command, I marvel at the crowds turning out (and paying top dollar even) to see the false prophets and false revivals that loom all to commonly uncontested, and untested on our Christian horizons. People are drunken on experiences, yet God is ignored, His Word is despised, His warnings are cast off, His prophets are scorned, His presence neglected, and we wonder why we wallow in the mire of our state.

“Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.” Hosea 4:11

To this day, most professing Christians are double-minded, unstable and confused, powerless over their own lives, and ineffective in the lives of others. But, thank God, there is an antidote to all this deception:

Part IV

“But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.” I John 2:20

The unction is not some feeling that comes over our legs and makes us run all over auditoriums, but the word means an “unguent smearing” or in plain English “the anointing”. The Holy Ghost knows all things. If He lives in you then you, too, have access to all knowledge, all wisdom and everything that pertains to life and godliness

“… But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” I John 2:27

The word of the Lord came to Moses in the wilderness. The word of the Lord came to Elijah in the wilderness. The word of the Lord came to Noah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Daniel, Isaiah, Joseph, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Samuel, Joshua, Caleb and Gideon giving them instruction and assurance that God was with them. Hosea, Amos, Joel and Jonah heard from God and delivered Gods message. John the Baptist was in the wilderness when the word of the Lord came to him. Jesus Christ, was led of the Spirit into the wilderness and was tempted of Satan himself; but He endured to return “in the Power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:14) with Gods message and the anointing of the Holy Ghost and power, to accomplish the mission for which He was chosen. Even Paul the apostle was in the wilderness learning from God and could say at last: “… I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Galatians 1:11-12

Peter was told by Jesus: “… Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven… upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:17-18

All throughout the book of Acts, God records for us that Stephen, Philip, Paul, Ananias and countless others continue to hear from and be lead by God Himself as He builds His church on the Revelation of Jesus given by the Father by His Spirit in the hearts of men: to all who truly desire to know Him, Jew and Gentile alike. Today we go and see a man or woman to give us “words” or “seminars” on this or that, For inspiration we go to church to be pumped up on empty hype (and pumped for money to boot). Pastors travel to “pastors conventions” at great cost hoping to receive some “gift” or ability, from other men: revival fire, holy laughter, or some other new thing, to cultivate a “new anointing” in their church. There is only one true anointing, and it comes from God. Why do we go to be merchandised by hucksters, magicians and hypnotists?

Did God Die?

“Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.” Acts 8: 20-21 “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.” II Peter 2:3

Today it is all for sale and nobody seems to notice or care… but God does. He’s not pleased with all the merchandise. But more sadly still, the merchandise is only just that: merchandise– having no Godly source. Ultimately it taints our relationship with God and has us believing lies. So we grow numb to the Scripture and the Voice of God. Stumbling in the dark waiting for the next tape, book or video in the series. God never sold His Word. But rather, His true people suffered and even died in faith believing it and then giving it away to others who often didn’t even want to hear it.

Part V

“Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:” Isaiah 30:1 “Who is your covering?” I’m asked. “The Holy Ghost” I reply. “Ha Ha Ha, good one. But seriously brother, who’s your covering church… we’d be glad to train you and disciple you in our program. You have the real potential to be a minister. We offer medical benefits, a good salary…” I interrupt, “You mean be a hireling? And instead of God’s healing power, I’d have medical benefits? No thanks!” The Holy Ghost is our covering. We belong to God’s family. We are one by His Spirit and accountable to Him. We have fellowship with God’s true church, the Ecclesia, a called out body of believers. We’re accountable to each other. His Spirit covers us. He is the Mighty Counselor, who hears our prayers and supplies our needs. He gives us our marching orders and we obey, by His grace,
the best we can. He’s our teacher, our instructor and the power we strive not to deny. So that we may overcome in temptation and enter into life. We count all dung compared to His presence and can’t imagine anything we’d wittingly trade for Him. All this through His anointing. “Are you an ordained minister?” I’m asked. “Yes” I say. “By what organization?” I’m asked. “God’s” I reply. God hasn’t permitted me to send $50 to anyone to buy a certificate showing I’m ordained. Neither has He allowed me to be ordained through the
state to be called “Reverend” “He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is His name.” Psalm 111:9 not mine! In scripture, I see the wicked kings ordaining the basest of men to be priests in the temple. So state ordination holds no clout with me being historically a practice of the wicked. Attending a seminary institution doesn’t mean you’re ordained either. Most of these are funded by atheist secular humanistic devils who trade the true gospel for today's trendy self-help and psychological methods and programs. They turn out just that for graduates. All for filthy lucre’s sake. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” Matthew 23:15

A degree from an earthly institution does not approve one to God. How haughty of us to think it would. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15 Furthermore, God’s calling and election are in His heart. There was no man to say “Jeremiah, I’m going to ordain you through my ministry ” Nor for Samuel, or Moses or Gideon need we go on? “Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?” II Corinthians 3:1 Yes, even Paul had laid hold on what Jesus said: “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit” John 15:16

Ordained by Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! See, so many of our well– practiced traditions make the Word of God have no effect in our lives. We need to know absolutely for ourselves that God is with us, anointing and ordaining us for service by His Spirit and power. Who ever said we need a church membership? Or a board who approved us as ministers? Consider what I say by the word. Do I lie? “Because of false brethren.” Those who do not have the Holy Ghost. “Unawares brought in” but master Christianeese lingo, “who came in privily” secretly “to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus.” and He in us. “That they might bring us into bondage.” To something besides God’s Word which makes us free. “To whom we gave place by subjection” submitted to, “No, not for an hour;” not at all. “That the truth of the gospel might continue with you” so you can see the real gospel in action. Galatians 2:4-5

Ah, the glorious liberty of the sons of God! Ordained by God, led of God as God has always intended since the world began. But because of today’s church system, we are very fragmented. Denominations, lukewarm seminaries, and programs of men, are all ploys of Satan to divide and conquer God’s elect. “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?” I Corinthians 3:1-4
God forbid! And God forbade denominations and divisions by men's titles and names. We are to be one in the Spirit. I stress this: we can only be one by the anointing of God, the Holy Ghost, and not by ecumenicism. “Together in spite of the Gospel” is not God’s plan for unity. So the only true division in the church lies between those with the Holy Ghost and those without the Holy Ghost.

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:” Matthew 3:11

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must decrease and let God increase. We, the church, are far too carnal. There are tens of thousands of so– called Christian denominations in this country alone. The devil is prevailing. But against a Spirit– filled life, full of the Revelation of God, “… the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18

Part VI

Now back to where we started. Many people feel they cannot minister. But it is not so. The demoniac out of whom Jesus cast a legion, returned to be a witness in his town. Luke 38:40. So did the woman at the well. John 4:28-30. And the man who received his sight. John chapter 9.

These all immediately became ministers. The only prerequisite for ministry we see was that men and women be filled with the Holy Ghost and faith. You may feel that you cannot do much for God because you work or have a family. But it is not so. From the moment in your life that you are filled with the Holy Ghost, you are anointed by God for service, and you’re enlisted into God’s plan. Viola, you are a full time minister. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, until He comes again or you go to Him.

“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” II Corinthians 3:5-6

God’s desire is that we be filled with His Spirit and a fountain of the living water of God’s Word flow from us to those around us: at work, at the store, at home, on the street, in church… all the time.

“And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My Lord Moses, forbid them. And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!” Numbers 11:25-29

These two weren’t named among the official seventy chosen. They didn't go to the tabernacle to prophesy. They prophesied everywhere. Envious and carnal people would’ve rejected them in pride. But meek and understanding people with God’s heart and a knowledge of God’s true will for man prevailed. God has called all of us to be witnesses unto Him in all the world. Not just on Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday night. But everywhere, all the time. he’s anointed us with His Holy Ghost to fulfill this mission. “What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops Matthew 10:27

Don’t be afraid, He backs up His word and will do the miraculous for the believer who will obey His voice and preach His word without fear, without compromise and without excuses. You are a full time witness.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified. And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.” Isaiah 61:1-6
